For the traveler, landscape painter, gardener -- anyone who wants to record what they see and experience in a personal watercolor journal. You'll learn 5 skills: to simplify your subjects, to render them quickly in pencil, to enhance your drawings with ink, to add color with watercolor washes, and to incorporate words into each page's design. We will work from real life and your photographs. Activities will include demonstrations, in-class exercises and outdoor excursions, weather permitting. Drawing Fundamentals I & II recommended; all levels welcome. Bring a sack lunch each day.

Explore six skills: simplify subjects, render them quickly in pencil, enhance your drawings with ink, add color with watercolor washes, design sketchbook pages, and incorporate words into each page design. Work from real life and your own photos. Expect demonstrations, in-class exercises and brief outdoor excursions (weather permitting). Some drawing experience is recommended.

This is an introduction to watercolor for absolute beginners. You'll learn how to set up your palette, use various brushes, prepare your paper, choose and mix colors, lay washes and work wet-in-wet. Our subjects will be simple still life objects, and our focus will be on mastering basic techniques. No prior knowledge of watercolor is required; however, you must have basic drawing skills. Bring a sack lunch each day.

MARCH 21, 2009: TAKING YOUR JOURNAL "ON THE ROAD" - THE ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN - supply list (pdf)
SPRUILL CENTER FOR THE ARTS / ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN This is a watercolor journaling adventure at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, 1345 Piedmont Avenue, Atlanta. Meet at the Garden entrance. We will start with a "refresher" lesson on watercolor journaling and a 30-minute demonstration. Then, you will be free to sketch wherever you wish until we reconvene for "show & tell" at the end of the day. Maps of the Garden and recommended spots for sketching will be provided. Instructor will be available to help you as needed. Experience in pencil and/or watercolor sketching is strongly recommended. $5 special-discount admission fee payable at the Garden entrance. A relaxing workshop in a beautiful mountain valley in the southern Appalachians for......absolute beginners! No experience needed! This course will cover fundamental drawing concepts and techniques in a cheerful and supportive environment. With Marilynn's demonstrations and guidance in drawing simple, everyday objects, students learn about line, shading, proportion, perspective and composition. Students are provided 3 hearty meals a day, cozy accommodations on the Folk School campus and a variety of entertainment throughout the week.
